World’s Smallest Country Legalizes Gay Marriage And Has No Gays

The island country of Pitcairn is the smallest country in the world with only 48 people and now gay marriage is legal on the island. Country officials decided to legalize gay marriage on the very principle of the act, despite no gay couples or residents living in the country.

The tiny country was established in 1790 by English mutineers and Tahitian passengers. Located in the Pacific British overseas territory with a population of 48 people, it is considered the smallest country in the world.

Gay marriage was actually legalized one month ago but just now made news because the tiny country’s website was down.

Deputy Governor of Pitcairn, Kevin Lynch said that the local council unanimously accepted the law change after England, Scotland, and Wales legalized gay marriage last year.

“It shows how much the islanders value equality and inclusion.” says Rodney Croome, the National Director of Australian Marriage Equality

Croome went on to say, “I could imagine some couples from off the island might find it a romantic destination, including Australians who can’t marry in their own country.”
