Long division doesn’t have to be boring, at least that’s what one Florida teacher has been preaching to her children. Instead of simply putting pencil to paper, her students sing and dance while solving math problems.
Nadine S. Ebri, a teacher at La Core Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida, realized her children were having issues with long division and she tackled the problem by creating a song and dance to help them understand the rather complex nuances of the problems put before them.
Ebri recorded them performing the song and posted the video on Facebook where it’s taking the educational community by storm. “Divide. Multiply. Subtract. Break it on down and bring it on back,” the class sings.
Putting music to learning makes a lot of sense. Millions of children learn their ABC’s in song and show’s like School House Rock have proven that song is one of the best educational tools available for children.
Researchers have even discovered that song is a better way to learn a foreign language than simple immersion and tests based around writing and speaking exams.
The video was uploaded on December 12, 2016, and has already racked up more than 155,000 views.
What’s most amazing is how excited the kids in the class are to be learning about math. You might want to turn down your computer speakers before you watch the video because there are a lot of very enthusiastic singers ready to take on long division.
Hopefully, more teachers will take a note from Ebri and attempt to create lessons for young children that are fun and engaging at the same time. We definitely approve of song and dance over shoving memorized equations down a child’s throat on a daily basis.
