Oregon Inmates Make Clothing For Premature Babies

Inmates at a Salem, Oregon prison spend countless hours each week making comfortable clothing for local premature babies. Each year more than 15 million babies are born premature. It’s increasingly difficult for hospitals to find comfortable clothing in the necessary sizes for them. Oregon Correctional enterprises runs the program that designs, sews, and donates baby clothing. The OCE, in partnership with the Department of Corrections, works to promote public safety by providing adults in custody with work and training opportunities, to teach them new skills that will help them be productive in the community upon release. The program has given inmates a new lease on life and a better way to connect with members of the community outside of jail.
