When Matthew was nine years old, he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). This kind of cancer is typically found in adults and rarely in children. Chronic myelogenous leukemia affects the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. The cancer typically spreads from beyond the bone marrow and into the blood. From there it can also spread to other parts of the body and is considered hard to treat.

For Matthew, this meant that he needed a bone marrow transplant. When he was almost 10 years old he was finally matched with a donor named Angelika from Germany. Matty’s treatment was successful and he is now in remission. Throughout his cancer journey, he always managed to keep a smile on his face. Nowadays, years later, Matty still returns to the hospital where he was treated and serves as an ambassador for the organization Kids Beating Cancer.
