On January 12, 2017, as he was preparing to leave the white house, President Obama offered Vice President Joe Biden a surprise he would never forget. Obama bestowed upon his friend the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A visibly shook VP accepted the medal. The white house describes the medal as “the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” In six decades only 582 people have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
