When Lauren Fern Watt learned that her English Mastiff, Gizelle, had been diagnosed with bone cancer and had only a few months left to live, she knew that a bucket list for her family pet of eight years was in order. Lauren set out with Gizelle to pack as many life experiences as she possible could into the little bit of time they still had together.
In a tribute the writer posted to Yahoo Travel she explains:
“I was told Gizelle wouldn’t make it until Christmas, but in January we sat by the ocean in Maine as it snowed the day before she died. Part of me wondered if this was her plan all along, to take me on an adventure, knowing we’d end up on a deserted beach alone. The sky was white, the trees were bare, and even the birds were hiding. The whole world felt lifeless, and it was hard to believe this beach was once filled with rainbow-colored umbrellas and cute boys lathered in SPF. It was then I realized that I was okay with letting Gizelle go.”
Check out the amazing adventures they too long time friends had. It truly is a beautiful story.
They went on a road trip.
They took a canoe ride.
They spent an entire day at Washington Square Park.
They visited with Santa’s Pug helpers.
They found the best donut in the world.
They enjoyed a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.
They cuddled in their free time.
They cooked and ate a lobster in Maine.
They visited Times Square.
They went to a party where Gizelle met a cute boy dog.
Then they enjoyed their final days together.
The beach was a beautiful setting for Gizelle’s last days, even in the middle of the winter.
One day after visiting the beach Gizelle passed away.
If you are bet own you probably understand the joy and grief that Lauren Fern Watt felt in those last days with Gizelle. The connections we share with our family pets simply can’t be explained to people who have never shared the same type of connection. Gizelle’s bucket list reminds us that we should savor every moment we have with our pets, because you never know when those days filled with love will come to an end.
