Irish Wolfhounds can be wonderful pets. They are very friendly and playful and are known to chase and tackle anything (or anyone) that moves. They are sweet and sensitive but can also be quite independent. They're also apt to be a little clumsy and destructive during the first couple years of puppyhood.
If you don't mind a dog who takes up a lot of space in your home or car and that insists on sitting on your lap or taking over your bed, then an Irish Wolfhound is the right dog for you. Look at these silly pics of these dogs and how they act around their humans...
Love And Affection Comes In All Sizes
Okay, we must point out that the woman in the photo, Amber, is only five feet tall. However, this Irish Wolfhound named Moose is still one big boy! The photo was posted by a dog resort that provides five-star amenities for people's furry friends. And it looks like Moose stayed there for a short time.
It's got to be so much fun to run a dog boarding house and to play with many different-sized animals, including gigantic Irish Wolfhounds. By the smile on Amber's face we can tell she had a lot of fun with Moose.
They Think They're Lap Dogs
Even though Irish Wolfhounds are huge, they don't necessarily realize how large they really are. This guy is obviously very affectionate. And like many dogs, he enjoys chilling on the sofa. His owner posted on Reddit: "My Irish Wolfhound, Sitting On Grandma's Lap. He Has No Idea How Big He Is."
While he may not know that he's quite a bit bigger than a chihuahua (or even a German Shepard for that matter), he dwarfs the senior citizen he is so dutifully sitting on.
This Guy's Huge & He's Only Eight Months Old
This not-so-little guy is only eight months old in this photo. His owner posted this image on Facebook with the caption: "Murphy at 8 months, he's now 4 years old and 165lb." Even though Murphy is depicted next to a toy car he still looks enormous! And apparently, according to his owner, riding in cars isn't his favorite thing.
One of the owner's pals commented on the picture, "My two Irish wolfhounds... were perfectly happy riding in the back seat of our 3-door Ford Focus Hatchback. They did not like the bigger car. People used to go nuts watching first one pony then the other exit that little car. And they were so well behaved."
This Particular Family Tradition Includes The Dog
People have all sorts of holiday traditions, and sometimes that involves wearing the same pajamas when opening gifts on Christmas morning. This family obviously carries on that tradition, and because their dog is part of the family he also gets to wear Christmas morning PJs.
Dram is an Irish Wolfhound who's currently four years old. He also has a human little brother named Warren who's not yet two. The pair apparently get along really well even though Warren is considerably smaller.
These Hungry Wolfhounds Are Ready For Breakfast
This photo is all about the noses. Just look how much bigger they are on the Irish Wolfhounds compared to the much smaller little pups in the foreground. This picture was captioned: "WE WANT YOUR TOAST!!" It's hard enough to ignore a regular-sized dog's pleas for snacks. We can't imagine what it's like to be around a begging wolfhound.
Imagine sitting at your dining table and having an Irish Wolfhound right next to you practically at your head height. How could you not give him table scraps?
Size Doesn't Matter When It Comes To Friendship
The caption on this pic is pretty simple: "Big Ron & Big Ern......" One person appropriately commented, "Big difference." And there certainly is. While both dogs are obviously quite opposite when it comes to size, that doesn't seem to affect their friendship. And I'm sure you too have that one short or tall friend in your group.
Both Big Ron and Big Ern are adorable in their own right. One just happens to be giant sized, while the other is an itty-bitty little thing. Either way, they're both adorable.
They're Very Cuddly
There's hardly anything in the world that's cuter than kids and pets. And these two are fast friends. The caption is: "Navy, like her parents before her, has decided that if Lincoln can't be a couch dog then she will be a floor person. Because where he can be spooned is where you’ll find her ... along with the rest of us."
First, let's recognize the girl's name. Navy is so cool! Second, let's point out how awesome it would be to use an Irish Wolfhound as a pillow. Sign us up!
At This Home, Dinner Is Served Irish Wolfhound Style
This is Zeusz. He lives in Budapest, and he's just over 12 months old. He has a little dog brother named Döme. This picture is pretty hilarious. Zeusz's owner captioned it: "Dog-head is served. Enjoy your meal!" It's got to be quite hard to eat a meal with an Irish Wolfhound in the household.
You can imagine how easy it would be for the dog to simply tilt its head towards your dinner plate and swallow it whole. The dog's head is actually larger than the plate itself. That's incredible.
No Paws About It, They're Really Big Animals
We challenge you to open your hand and place it on a flat surface. Now imagine a dog's paw right next to it that's exactly the same size. Yikes! Even if you are a small adult with small hands, it's hard to believe that a dog's paw could be just as big if not bigger.
This photo depicts a woman's hand next to an Irish Wolfhound's paw. The dog's paw is actually slightly larger than the human one next to it. Is that amazing or what?
Irish Wolfhound Puppies Don't Look That Big
This Irish Wolfhound is named Storm, and apparently she's a great mom. She takes care of her little ones and keeps them very clean and well fed. According to her owner, "She is so careful that she will not stand up until I have gathered the puppies into the overflow box, and won't get back in until they are safely contained."
This dog knows that's she's pretty big and won't move a muscle until her puppies are safely out of the way. She is without a doubt a good mom to her youngsters.
Very Little Stands In The Way Of An Irish Wolfhound On A Mission
Check out the caption of this photo: "My buddy #Chester named after #gkchesterton is an almost one year old #Irishwolfhound He wanted to look out the window." Yup, when a wolfhound wants to do something not much can stand in its way, which includes furniture and humans.
The one great benefit to being so large is you can do pretty much anything you want -- unless you want to fit in a small space. That is one thing that may be a little challenging for an Irish Wolfhound.
They Like Being On Top Of You
Sometimes it's really hard to understand just how huge an Irish Wolfhound is until you see one next to other dogs and their humans. This owner jokingly captioned the pic, "Just a lap dog." But if you look closely, you'll notice that the lap dog has a lap dog.
The hound is chilling out on the bed while his owner is on the phone, and then there's the little black dog chilling on the wolfhound looking perfectly comfortable on his pile of fur. Life doesn't get much better than this.
Check Out This Irish Wolfhound Pack Ready To Feast
We can't imagine what it's like making Thanksgiving dinner with just one Irish Wolfhound in the house. We can't comprehend what it would be like with four of them under foot! These pups could easily overwhelm the older woman who is preparing a feast for the holiday. Yet, they're not.
They are (somewhat) patiently waiting for a snack. You have to wonder what type of person would keep four of these massive animals in her home. It's got to get a little crowded with so many gigantic dogs wandering around.
They Also Like The Occasional Treat
Most dog owners know that their pups enjoy a treat now and then just like they do. And that includes ice cream. Check out this Irish Wolfhound testing the ice cream for his human. We actually hope it's his own personal treat so she doesn't have to lick off his drool.
Notice how easy it is for the wolfhound to reach the window. He has no problem propping up his paws on the ledge of the truck. It's amazing how tall he looks next to the two women besides him.
Even Non-Dog Lovers Love The Breed
Not everyone is a dog lover. But sometimes certain canines are so adorable they can't help but win you over. This pet owner posted the above photo with the caption, "My dad, who always complains about the dogs." A user commented on how adorable it is because the dad is even trying to hold the dog up.
"Your dad is in 'this position is just uncomfortable enough that I feel it but so adorable that I don't want to move," the user noted. We agree 100 percent.
Not All Irish Wolfhound Affection Is Reciprocal
We're not sure a caption is even needed for this photo because it speaks for itself. Irish Wolfhounds are huge animals, and if they want love and attention, they will do what they want in order to get it. It doesn't matter if you're hanging out in a chair just minding your own business.
What's funny about this photo is the woman doesn't exactly look thrilled to be the object of the wolfhound's affections. In fact, her body language says quite the opposite. Surprisingly, everyone loves Irish Wolfhound hugs and kisses.
When Pizza Is Around, Look Out
Like most dogs, Irish Wolfhounds like to eat. And if they spot their owners eating something delicious such as pizza, you better watch out. Just take a look at this pack of wolfhounds and what appears to be a shepherd among their midst. They are absolutely surrounding their human just waiting for a morsel of food.
It's a good thing these dogs are such gentle creatures, otherwise it would be absolutely terrifying to have them on stand by just waiting for you to drop a piece of pepperoni on the floor.
This One's A Particularly Dainty-Like Lap Dog
"He's sitting so dainty-like!," writes one Instagram user about this pup. And we couldn't agree more. Another person added, "Wow !! You are a tall boy!!" This guy is named Enzo, and he is one heck of a big dog. He also enjoys sitting on people's laps even though he obviously isn't a lap dog.
When you think 'lap dog,' you don't usually picture an Irish Wolfhound. You're more apt to think of a small terrier or chihuahua. Well, as you know by now, Irish Wolfhounds defy stereotypes.
They Can Be Bed Hogs
We love this photo's caption: "Naps & Cuddles with hoomum." Sully the Irish Wolfhound lives in Melbourne, Australia. His hobbies include short walks to the couch, whipped cream, howling at the beach, and going to the drive in, according to his Instagram page. He obviously also enjoys cuddling up with his mom.
It's got to be a little challenging to share a bed with a wolfhound. There's no doubt that they hog the covers. And if they sleep diagonally, there's no way there's enough room for two people and the dog.
They're Protective Of Their Pack
Here is a photo of a wolfhound named Jarvis who is "watching his boy." He has one arm draped protectively around this little man either for comfort or because he wants to make sure the little guy is under his watch. It's really heart warming.
It must be so nice to be loved by an Irish Wolfhound. According to experts, the breed is often calm, sometimes playful and silly, and always easygoing and reliable. One thing is for sure: they make great companions for people of all ages.
