Inmates breaks out of cell to help jailer in trouble

This story of good samaritans saving a stranger’s life is like nothing we have seen before. Inmates at Parker County Jail risked their own safety recently to help a guard desperately needing medical attention.

The Parker County jailer suddenly slumped over unconscious, and a group of inmates fought to break free of their temporary holding cell.

Immediately after breaking out of the holding cell, the inmates began shouting for help and banging on a locked door.
“He just fell over. Looked like an act,” inmate Nick Kelton told WFAA, “Could have died right there.”

Court staff came running after they heard banging on the door and inmates yelling. They immediately began CPR while waiting for the paramedics.

The inmates knew they could have been shot at for their actions.

“We were worried they’re going to come with guns drawn on us,” Kelton said.

“They thought we were taking over,” inmate Floyd Smith added.

Parker County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Speegle, was the first to arrive and he admits things could have ended differently. “He had keys. Had a gun. It could have been an extremely bad situation,” Speegle said.

The man survived and is expected to return to work next week.

“He could’ve been there ten or fifteen minutes before… any other personnel walked in,” Captain Mark Arnett said.

“It never crossed my mind not to [help]” Kelton said. “Whether he’s got a gun or a badge, if he falls down, I’ll help him.”
