Premature babies can often be faced with long stays in the hospital before they ever go home with mom and dad.
A press release from Huggies has revealed that up to 1.4% of babies born every year weigh as little as 2 pounds and traditional diapers are not a good fit because of their size.
In response to that statistic, the company has developed Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers which fit babies even when they are incredibly tiny.
The company says the new Huggies are a safe, comfortable option. Diapers that are too large can irritate premature babies fragile, underdeveloped skin.
“We’re passionate about helping all babies thrive, especially the smallest and most fragile. This Huggies diaper reflects our ongoing commitment to deliver innovative solutions for the NICU,” Eleonora Daireaux, vice president at Huggies North America, said in the press release.
“After hearing of the need for a diaper that meets the special requirements of these babies, our expert teams in skin science, research, product safety and manufacturing were inspired. Knowing every second counts for these babies, the team acted quickly to bring Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers from concept to launch in hospitals in just six months.”
The preemie diapers have specially-sized fasters and a narrow, absorbent pad that provides a flexible fit for the baby. This makes it possible for the preemie to be comfortably positioned in a fetal tuck, with his or her arms and legs close to the body, according to the press release.
Huggies worked with NICU nurses across the country to develop the diapers. Taking the diapers one step further, they are individually hand inspected by a Huggies staff member before they are boxed and shipped.
“Good-fitting diapers are important to the healthy growth and development of our smallest patients,” Anjanette Lee, MS, CCC/SLP, NTMTC, an infant development specialist at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, Texas, said in the press release.
“In our experience, we found Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers conformed to the baby’s bottom without gapping or limiting leg movement. The thinner fasteners and less material at the waist provided a good fit for baby while still protecting their fragile skin,” Lee added.
The “micro” or “little” sized diapers were created specifically for the NICU with a focus on protecting a small babies fragile skin.
Great job Huggies!
