Whether it's the size of the meal or speed of eating, the records that have been set in Guinness food lore are as astonishing as they are satisfying. So how big is the world's largest hot dog? What are the most hamburgers eaten in three minutes? These are the craziest Guinness food records!
A 60 Layer Sammie
It might not be the easiest sandwich to eat, but this 60-layer sandwich, crafted by Di Lusso Deli Company in 2016 is the biggest. In order to earn the crown of "most stacked sandwich ever" the creation needed to stand without support for 60 seconds.
The man behind the layers was Dr. Irwin Adam, a creative food scientist who likes to re-imagine how we interact with our food. The previous record was 40 layers and was set by Sugardale Foods in Cleveland, Ohio.
A 3,699 Pound Pumpkin Pie
So just how to do make a 3,699 pound, record-breaking pumpkin pie? The recipe calls for 1,212 pounds of canned pumpkin, 525 pounds of sugar, 14.5 pounds of cinnamon, 109 gallons of evaporated milk, seven pounds of salt, and 2,796 eggs.
The monstrous seasonal dish was made in New Bremen Ohio and measured a whopping 20 feet in diameter. It became the centerpiece at the 2010 New Bremen Pumpkinfest, where making large pies has put them on the map.
A Head Sized Avocado
In 2019, the Pokini family in Hawaii took their 5.6-pound avocado to Guinness and set the world record for the world's heaviest avocado. The previous record was held by another family in Hawaii who had a 5.5-pound fruit.
Surprisingly, not a lot of work went into growing the epic avocado. Juliane Pokini told CNN, "When we planted it in the ground, we never did anything to it except for some trimming every now and then."
An Entire Burrito Gone In 44 Seconds
Leah Shutkever took speed eating to new heights in May 2019 when she devoured a mission style burrito in 44 seconds. According to the Guinness website a mission style burrito consists of, "a wheat flour tortilla which totally encloses a filling of rice, beans, meat, and other ingredients."
A fitness freak, Leah credits her toned physique as the reason she can eat so much. She says having such little body fat gives her stomach room to expand when she takes on a food challenge.
The Man Who Ate 30,000 Big Macs
Donald Gorske is one of the most well-known residents of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, but not for the reasons you may think. In 2016, he officially set the Guinness world record for the most Big Macs consumed in a lifetime with 28,788.
Since then, it's fair to guess he has eclipsed 30,000, although a new official number has not yet been confirmed. To achieve such a high number of fast-food burgers, Gorske has eaten an average of two Big Macs a day for nearly 50 years.
The Longest Hot Dog Controversy
According to the Guinness Book of World Records the longest hot dog ever was revealed in 2011 in Paraguay and measured 669 feet long. Controversially, a town in Germany says the record should belong to them after residents claimed to create a 715-foot-long hot dog.
Topping them all is the 1996 Summer Olympics commemorative hot dog created by Sara Lee in 1996 that measured 1,996 feet. The rumor is the Guinness refused to recognize the Sara Lee dog because it was not placed into a continuous bun, breaking the rules.
The World's Biggest Chocolate Coated Candy Mosaic
Everyone loves M&M's, so it's not surprising to find out the chocolate-coated candy has been involved in many Guinness World Records. The most impressive one, however, is the 291,490 piece mosaic of the famed logo created in 2017.
The logo was constructed in Bulgaria and took 27 people 17 hours and 30 minutes to complete. In total it measured 49.59 square meters and was commissioned by Mars Incorporated, the maker of M&M's.
A Whopper Of A Record
It was 2014 when Major League Eating legend Takeru Kobayashi set the record for most hamburgers consumed in three minutes. The speed eater appeared on Italian TV show Lo Show dei Record and demolished 12 hamburgers in three minutes.
During the record-setting challenge, Kobayashi was allowed one condiment on each burger. After all, it wouldn't be fair to the challenge if he was forced to eat dry hamburgers. He chose mayonnaise for every. Single. One. We're not sure what tactical advantage that may have given him.
How Many Hard Boiled Eggs In A Minute?
You might be a fan of having a few hard-boiled eggs for breakfast, but how many do you think you could eat in a minute? The record was set by Ashrita Furman in 2012 when he peeled and ate six.
On average, that means Furman consumed one hard-boiled egg every ten seconds. On top of his eggs-cellent adventure, Furman holds several other Guinness records and has earned the title of the "most prolific record-breaker."
You Can't Get This Pizza Delivered
Created by NIPfood in Fiera Rome, the world's largest pizza was cooked up in 2012 and had a total surface area of 13,580 square feet. A team of five men from the company crafted the delicious pizza, which was gluten-free.
When they were finished they named their creation "Ottavia." The name means "eighth son" and was chosen as an homage to Octavian Augustus, the first Roman emperor and the man who brought economic and cultural stability to Rome.
The World's Longest Cooking Time
For some people, cooking is a sprint and not a marathon. They want their food as quickly as possible. For others, like Rickey Lumpkin II, a marathon is just fine, especially when it raises money for charity.
In 2018, in Los Angeles, California, Lumpkin II set the record for the longest cooking time when he stayed in the kitchen for 68 hours and 30 minutes. By setting the cooking record, Lumpkin II helped raise money for children living in Africa.
The Ferrero Rocher Record
Blessed with over five million YouTube subscribers, Furious Pete set the record for most Ferrero Rocher chocolates eaten in one minute in 2012. To achieve the feat, Pete needed to successfully unwrap, eat, and swallow each chocolate.
So how many did he finish? Furious Pete set the one-minute gold standard at nine. Since then, several challengers have tried to unseat him, but no one has been deemed worthy. Do you have what it takes?
An Oversized Scoop Of Strawberry Ice Cream
Imagine this, you walk into the ice cream shop as ask for one scoop of strawberry ice cream. The worker says, "I'll be right back" and exits only to return with a 5'6" tall and 6'2" wide scoop weighing in at 3,010 pounds.
Created by Kemps LLC, the oversized single serving of ice cream was created in 2014 in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Overall, 733 containers of strawberry ice cream were used. Once the record was official, the ice cream was doled out for free at the Cedarburg Strawberry Festival.
A Raw Onion Eaten Was Eaten In 29 Seconds
In a move that likely left him crying for months, Yusuke Yamagachi started the New Year in 2013 by eating an entire raw onion in 29.56 seconds. He consumed the tear-inducing food in Japan as a part of the nation's New Year's festivities.
The previous record was set at the same event in 2011 by Akria Kudo. Furious Pete also attempted to set the record in a video he recorded for YouTube in 2011. He finished in 43 seconds.
An Oddly Specific Brussel Sprout Record
For the last decade, brussel sprouts have slowly crept their way back into fashion. Because of this, setting the record for consuming them has become quite competitive and oddly specific. During the minute-long Guinness challenge, a person must pick up each sprout one at a time with a cocktail stick.
The current record for most Brussel sprouts eaten in one minute is 31 and was set by Linus Urbanc on November 26, 2008, in Sweden.
25 Fluffy Marshmallows In One Minute
Since 2013, Anthony Falzon has held the record for most marshmallows eaten in one minute at 25. He set the record in Malta, and no challengers have come close to claiming the throne in over half a decade.
Amazingly, this isn't the only marshmallow related record contained in the Guinness Book of World Records. In 2012, Brent Stephenson set the record for the highest jump into the fluffy treats. He made his leap of faith from 28 feet and 11 inches high.
The World's Worst Breath
In one breath-destroying minute in 2012, Patrick Bertoletti set the record for most garlic cloves eaten with 36. He achieved this feat on January 14th of that year at Sierra Studios in East Dundee, Illinois.
Similar to the hot dog record, there is debate as to whether Bertoletti's is the true record. Whether it is or not, his is the only one that Guinness recognizes. If you ever want to attempt to break a Guinness record, it is imperative to follow the rules as written!
An Unnecessarily Long Egg Noodle
In 2019 a Japanese chef named Hiroshi Kuroda broke the record for the world's longest continuous egg noodle. His world-record-setting final thread measured in at just over 602 feet and took one hour to cook through entirely.
According to Guinness, "To prevent breakage and help Hiroshi throw the noodle into the wok, the noodle was soaked in sesame oil. When he throws the noodle into the wok, he applies pressure to the noodle in order to elongate it."
Another Unnecessarily Long Noodle
If you thought 602 feet was impressive, then you'll be blown away when you learn that the record for the longest continuous noodle (not type-specific) was set in China in 2017. The noodle in question was made by the Xiangnian Food Co., LTD and measure in at 10,119 feet!
This monstrous noodle took 17 hours to roll out. It then took another three hours to measure and confirm the length of the noodle before it was fed to the public.
This Hot Dog Will Hurt You Wallet
When you go to a baseball game or a hot dog cart, you expect to spend a few bucks. The Tokyo Dog food truck in Seattle must not have gotten the message when they sold the world's most expensive hot dog in 2014.
With a hefty price tag of $169, whoever bought this devilish delight definitely felt the dollars leave their wallet. To justify the price tag, the ingredients of the hot dog are butter teriyaki grilled onions, a smoked cheese bratwurst, shaved black truffles, Japanese mayo, caviar, Wagyu beef, foie gras, a brioche fun, and Maitake mushrooms.
