You don’t need to be in some super factory to genetically modify plants. You can also graft together similar varieties of fruits, allowing them to merge or even co-exist on a single tree.
It was the idea of co-existence that led Sam Van Aken to begin his work on a new variety of stone tree.
Aken realized his local grocery only featured several varieties of local stone fruits. He soon learned that a local orchard was about to be destroyed. Sam decided to buy the orchard and actually add more fruits to the land. Sam learned about grafting techniques while living in Pennsylvania. He used those techniques to create his first super tree. Soon afterwards various fruits began to grow. All together there are 40 kinds of stone fruits on the tree. The fruits are similar to apricots and plums. The tree isn’t full grown yet, but Sam says it will eventually look like this.
Not only will the tree have 40 fruits, but it is astoundingly beautiful.
