This line in “Jingle Bells” refers to the festive bells someone put on the shortened tail of the horse pulling the sleigh. The horse’s “bobtail” is modified that way, so it doesn’t get caught in the harness needed for the sleigh.
“Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh, o’er the fields we go, laughing all the way….”
- Bells on bobtail ring, making spirits bright
- All the bells will ring, making spirits bright
- All the sleigh bells ring, making feelings right
- Bells will come to ring, making you feel right
