At seventeen years old, Mona Patel lost her leg when a drunk driver hit her on her college campus. The car crushed Patel’s leg and foot when it pinned her against a metal railing. She went on to graduate college, earning a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees. Starting a career as a social worker, Patel also wanted to help other people like her.

She founded a non-profit called San Antonio Amputee Foundation for help and support and has led groups of amputees on endurance climbs. They even made it to the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. She told CNN, “I know why this happened to me. It has become my platform professionally, philanthropically — just to embrace the people that come to me. And I hold their hand through as much as they need me to.”
